In 1908-09 Sir Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition got to within ninety-seven miles of the South Pole before being forced to turn around in the face of certain death from starvation.

In October 2008, descendants of Sir Ernest Shackleton's original band of Antarctic explorers will mount an expedition to celebrate the centenary of the Nimrod Expedition. They also hope to complete unfinished business on behalf of the forebears, by reaching the South Pole.

This expedition is The Shackleton Foundation's first major fundraising event, and is being mounted to raise awareness of the Foundation.
